☆ 10-year Treasury rises as investors weigh state of economy

ET, the yield on the 10-year Treasury was up by over two basis points to 4.5639%, holding above the 4.5% mark it initially crossed Tuesday. The 2-year Treasury yield was last less than one basis points higher to 4.9580%. U.S. Treasury yields were higher on Wednesday as investors considered the state of the economy and digested a weak auction on the five-year note. Yields climbed higher Tuesday after a Treasury Department auction of 5-year notes worth $70 billion saw weak demand. Investors also considered how the economy is faring and awaited fresh economic data due throughout the week which could inform Federal Reserve policymaking.

More than half a million customers across nine states from Texas to Pennsylvania had no power early Monday morning, after powerful storms and tornadoes over the weekend left at least 18 people dead. There were nearly 200,000 outages in Kentucky as of 4 a.m., and more than 200,000 customers were without power across Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Virginia and West Virginia, according to the tracking site poweroutage.us. Andy Beshear of Kentucky said early Monday that he had declared a state of emergency. As thunderstorms continued overnight, more than 12 million people in the Southeast and Midwest were at one point under tornado watches, indicating that tornadoes were possible, according to the National Weather Service. Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, which was scheduled to take two NASA astronauts to the International Space Station on May 6, will remain on the ground for at least another week as engineers chase down a small helium leak. Additional opportunities to launch are available on June 2, June 5 and June 6. Officials from Boeing and NASA said they needed the time to understand the problem and develop workarounds. On May 6, the astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams were already strapped in the Starliner when the launch was called off because of a malfunctioning valve in the second stage of the Atlas V rocket. That problem was unrelated to the Starliner capsule, but then engineers spotted a small helium leak in the Starliner’s propulsion system.
